“Over my head, I hear music in the air, there must be a God somewhere”, a quote from a Spiritual.This atelier will provide a time of focus, preparation, practice and presentation and ‘spiritual offering’ using the historical reflection, and background of the Spiritual as a musical roadmap.
From the voices of “the invisible church” gathered in the fields far from the master’s house and their native homeland, to the concert stage, we will hear and experience: the pain (of broken relationships and loss of freedom), the praise (to an omnipotent God Who we acknowledge and in Whom we believe), the suffering (of brutal and harsh treatment and the barriers created by the different languages), the strategy (that in time will be revealed through our struggle), the tears and the triumph!
Our musical engagement with the spiritual will provide us with a glimpse of the hope expressed in this great body of music, and an understanding of the heart of a people separated from ‘the familiar’, yet expressive of the soul’s spiritual freedom in prayerful, faith-filled verses out of the depths of their homesickness to an ability to see beyond. Yes, even to transcend their circumstance.
The work songs, the message songs, the prayer songs that point and direct our hearts to a knowledge that God Is… and that we can communicate with Him and others through our collective musical expression…
